Store Closed but Still Making Glass Flowers

We closed the store in August, took a little time off, but I am still making my garden glass flowers. I sold a bunch in December by putting them on a email. I have an order for 50 this spring, so I'm putting together 100 so the customer can choose their favorites. I plan on putting 10 together each week, so I'm going to put them on this blog (with prices), do an occassional email with the new ones, and put some in the new ArtisTree. Copic Marker Class- Thursday, July 28th 5-7pm $30

The big rage in card making is Copic Markers. In this class you will be introduced to a couple of techniques that you can incorporate into your card making and scrapbooking crafts. You will complete 2 embellished cards (one a tissue box cover) using several copic markers and rubber stamps taught by Copic certified instructor, Judy Applegarth. Some of the techniques you will learn: Copic coloring system, basic coloring, feathering, dyeing your flowers and ribbons. Held in the parking lot behind Pickled Tink and 41 Taylor, in the driveway between the houses, on the front lawns and sidewalks in front of the 2 houses and in Pickled Tink and 41 Taylor. Only $50 for a table, $75 for a 10 X 10 tent, and $100 for 12 X 12, (plus $15 for the city if you don't have a Reno Business License) Every year it gets bigger! I am getting married in September! So ALL of the posts until then will be about my wedding...

Just kidding... well sort of... let's just say I am not making promises that I will posting about anything else because I am eating, drinking and dreaming WEDDING. There is not much else going on in my mind right now... Is that normal? I feel like it's crunch time with less than 3 months to go! Eeekkk

Oh and the reason for my post... Jenny from Hank + Hunt (www.hankandhunt.blogspot.com) and (www.etsy.com/people/hankandhunt/favorites) is going to provide garlands for my entire wedding venue!!! To say that I'm thrilled that she offered to decorate my wedding with her fabulous garlands is a huge understatement....

Tracey from www.41taylor.com came running over to Pickled today and said "guys, I hit the chandelier mother load! Come quick! They are holding them for me! Oh and I have a coupon!" That was music to my ears=) Before I could even think that I am running a boutique and have a facial in an hour that I should probably be setting up for... I grabbed my purse and was out the door. I mean... motherload, I couldn't resist those words. Seriously though... I probably spend hours at garage sales and thrift stores looking for vintage crystal chandeliers, so when I walk into a store and there are 5 gorgeous chandies sparkling and they are 50% off, ahhhhhh!!!!! What a great friend. Thank you Tracey! Oh and of course they will all be for sale on Saturday=)

Measure once, cut twice?

I FINALLY finished this potting bench I have been working on for days... It turned out just how I imagined too! I didn't put a hole in the bench because I think it would make an adorable drink station in someones backyard. It going to look a lot cuter in a backyard instead of the back alley behind Pickled Tink... Maybe my backyard? Ha. I intended to "whip" 4 of these little babies out in 1 day. Well after 4 trips to Lowe's, 4 times of taking it apart and starting over, 4 MEN telling me "the right way" I put some meaning to measure twice, cut once! I put so many hours into building this one that I am going to have a hard time selling it =( Have you ever made something that is too cute to sell... I think I just did. oops. Good news is I have 3 more windows (from my picker) that are going to be equally as great (and hopefully easier too now that I have a plan). Make sure you stop by June 5Th for our Taylor St. Market. We have such cute vendors/artist coming! I'll be posting some sneak peeks of our Artist as soon as I get the pictures. It is from 8-3pm. Farm "Junk" + Vintage Glam = Pickled Tink

I had to describe our store today and the best I could come up with was "farm junk meets vintage glam." HA. Then I looked around and said ya that's about right... Crystal chandeliers hung above antlers. The funny thing is they totally go together! New mixed with old. Kinda like Meg (the other owner) and I (just kidding Meg). But seriously driftwood sitting on an old painted table with shiny glass and silver. There is something about this look that is charming, eclectic and classy. I think its addicting and fabulous!

My Engagement Session

I am so happy with how our engagement pictures turned out! Kelli France (www.francephotography.com) is fabulous! She took all these and so many other great shots up at sand harbor in one hour. I can't wait to get them on my walls! She lives in Colorado but frequents the Reno/Tahoe area because she has so many clients out west. She is doing our wedding in September too... but Kelli made some great points about how engagement pictures are great on the walls because they are so playful and tell a story, where wedding photos tend to be so staged and posey. If you are already married and never got engagement photos, guess what? It's not too late! She is so great at capturing real expression shots. Seriously she is the best I've seen!

My Kids...

There is a reason why I am sharing pictures of my family. Pickled Tink has chosen the SPCA as our foundation to donate to during the Taylor St. Market. I always love helping people/pets in need. There are so many pets that need a happy home out there. Above are my babies that we rescued from the HIGH SIERRA ANIMAL RESCUE in Portola (near Quincy). Button (my niece named her) and Mr. Big Ben (who now weighs 100lbs.). I'm not going to turn into Bob Barker but I do love this charity! So come out on June 5Th and help us support the SPCA. We are asking for a $1 donation or bring pet food or a toy.

American Picker

I'm so excited! Today I found my very own "picker"! If you have never watched the show American Picker than this term probably doesn't make sense to you... Basically he brings me windows, doors, glass knobs, chandelier crystals... you name it-he can find it! Then he wholesales them to me (Pickled Tink). It's pretty great! Today he brought me this great half glass door on his bike! Talk about dedicated. He knew I would love it and turn it into something fabulous! I wish I had a picture to share but then you would know what he looks like and might steal him=( Ha! Like a guy with a vintage door on his bike isn't obvious enough...

I didn't take any pictures from "Midtown Nights" because I was so busy helping customers make earrings for $5. We have never had so many people in our store at one time! I think the next one is going to be in July as part of an official Artown event.
It is so exciting to be a part of this up and coming area! (Midtown is the area between Plumb lane and California Ave). 41Taylor (www.41taylor.com), the HUB coffee, bootleg courier, Junkee, Out of bounds, and the many stores that are going to open by November.

Tufted Bench

Here is the before of my grandfathers bench that I inherited.

Look how this tufted bench is coming along! You'll have to wait to see the finished product until next week because I ran out of button covers... Hopefully I can sew a pillow and my fiance can hang the mirror to finish the entry way for the full effect!

Cover the screw heads with button covers.

Screw a washer and wood screw at every corner until it grabs the wood underneath.

Cover the bench using a staple gun.

Sew them together with a 1/4 seem using heavy duty thread.

Start by cutting out squares. I used 7 inch squares out of painters drop cloth.

Love it!

I had so much fun making this birdhouse! Music, wine and a quiet house created the perfect atmosphere for me to play. The knob is from home depot (I did a patina finish to cover the gold), I got the blue key insert from the Tattered House is Roseville. I found the hose nozzel in my grandfathers garage! Do you like to collect things? Bring them in and design your own birdhouse! Our next class is Friday March 12, from 11-3.

Here is our new dining area. I thought I'd share a photo to inspire people on how to decorate on a budget! The chairs and table were from a garage sale. ($135 total!) The chairs used to be green. (to see how I painted them and the hutch sign up for the painted furniture class on March 26th). The table runner and slip covers are made out of painters drop cloth. I have an old trunk and a birdcage on the other side. (More pictures to come when I get my chandelier hung!)

Whew! We finished 'em just in time! If you have been in the shop lately we apologize for wearing our "grubs" but we have been busy working on 47 birdhouses for the Boys and Girls Club Annual Gala. They are going to be the center pieces for there birds and bees theme. How cute is that?
It's funny how crafting can make you feel like you work at a sweatshop when you have to mass produce like we did. But we managed to have some fun along the way and also got inspired to start making some smaller birdhouses for the shop that will sell for $45. I better go get the paint out of my nails... E

I think it is considering I hate doing laundry...

The fiance and I just purchased our first house and the first room I decorated

was our laundry room???

It could be because I have never had a laundry room, or it could be that I have the thought if you have a nice laundry room it sets a good standard for the rest of the house....

Anyway I will be sharing pictures soon, but I have two laundry racks (from pickled tink for $60, they are $100 in ballard design) and the glass detergent jar for $21.

I picked this sign up at the Genoa Candy Dance last weekend because it makes me laugh... It now hangs proudly at our register in Pickled Tink. Not for pitty but to educate customers that we did not open Pickled Tink to get rich. Many people have advised us to be open more days, longer hours, advertise more... but the truth is that we opened Pickled Tink because it is FUN! It doesn't feel like work to us.

Our five year plan is to be open 6 days a week with employees. So we are going to move down the street to "the big house"! And have our classes in this amazing garage right behind it so we can accommodate 15 in a class. I'm smiling while typing because thanks to all of you we are already growing out of 39 E. Taylor!

And now for the major news! We are putting an Emporium in the old Crystal Springs building! Think antique mall meets plumbgate! It is still in the planning stages but the reason I am posting this is to get you excited about Taylor St.

Tell us about the name Pickled Tink and why you chose it?

(Meg) Emily’s grandpa had a boat when she was growing up named Pickled Tink. When she told me about the boat, it just seemed to fit. Now when we think of the name Pickled Tink, it brings to mind fun, creativity, and a playfulness that we all have stashed somewhere inside of us. This is what our store represents to us, and hopefully to anyone who decides to drop in.

What was the motivation to found Pickled Tink?

(Emily) It all began with Meg’s birdhouses. She taught me how to make them, and each one seemed to represent our own individual personality. We began to express our creativity together through the birdhouses, scrapbooking, and furniture re-doing. That’s when we realized that so many women (including ourselves) suppress this desire in their lives, and replace it with jobs that pay the bills. We want to offer a place for women to go where they can get completely submerged in a project, leave the mess, and go back to their lives. Come in by yourself or with some girlfriends, use our tools and supplies, and go home with something original, and made by you.

I’m curious as to how such a talented and creative group of women find each other.

(Meg) Well, it’s actually quite a romantic story. Emily and I met when Emily was in second grade. Emily and my son, Chuck, were friends all through school, and stayed in touch through college. When Emily and Chuck came back to Reno from college they began dating, and are now engaged. This truly makes Pickled Tink a family business. Obviously fate wanted our paths to be connected!

With the store side and class side, which portion is the main one, or do both areas work harmoniously?

(Emily) They definitely work in harmony because anyone can come in and create, or they can just do a little shopping. At Pickled Tink there is something for everyone! This way, you can come in and create, shop, teach a class, or even sell your handmade items. Our boutique gives local artists an opportunity to sell their items on consignment. We hold classes everyday of the week except Sundays, and the boutique section is open Thursday through Saturday.

Speaking of local artists, what are some of the handmade items you sell in your store?

(Meg) We have so many different items from so many different personalities! My daughter, Danielle Sindlinger, makes adorable children’s clothing with monsters sewn on each one. Every monster is unique and comes with its own personalized tag with its name and a description of its personality. Sandra makes precious hair bows for little girls. They come in every color and size, and fit any personality. She also makes a wide variety of baby accessories, including wipe dispensers, and burp cloths. You can find just about anything in our shop whether you’re looking for a gift, or something for yourself.

What are all the kinds of classes that you teach at Pickled Tink?

(Emily) We have teachers in so many different types of artistry. We have over nine teachers who are instructing various types of classes. Our artists are trained in sewing, painting, making jewelry, knitting and crocheting, paper crafting, photography, and so much more. This month we are featuring classes where you can learn to decorate a children’s table set, decoupage a home décor piece, crochet a throw rug, sew a flower pin cushion, embellish a birdhouse, sew a spa wrap, sew a clutch, make a set of cards, make a piece of jewelry, furniture painting techniques, make a “summer fun” memory book, make a vintage memory book, sew a tote, make a vintage candle, and make “mommy and me” pajamas.

What kinds of events do you host at your shop?

(Meg) We will host birthday parties, girls night out parties, bunco night with the girls, baby showers, or any kind of get together you can conger up. If you want to come in and create something with a group, we can do that. We can also just provide a cute space for you to gather with friends, chat, and have a good time. Pickled Tink recently hosted a young girl’s birthday party, and each girl was able to sew her very own pair of pajama pants. We brought in pizza, played music, and had a great time!

OK, so the Clever staff is always out looking for that special find, whether it be clothing, jewelry or a potholder. But, Pickled Tink brings forth the idea of creating that find from scratch. Tell us about that and how you guys contribute on a whole other level to the fashion savvy community.

(Emily) For us at Pickled Tink, being fashion savvy has more to do with expressing your true self than it does with following a trend that someone else tells you is right. We provide a template and the tools, and you come in and add your own personal flair to any piece. We want people to view our classes as a “safe place” where you are free to create and truly be yourself.

My Lil Monsters

My lil Monsters is a company my future sis-in-law started. They are a top seller in Pickled Tink. Every monster has a name and its own tag. Above is the Hudson Monster and the tag says "Hi, I'm Hudson. Do you want to play with me? I will always be your friend and watch over you. The more you use me, the cuter I get!"

They come in over 24 different styles and colors for girls or boys.
She does custom orders for onesies, t-shirts and sweatshirts.

Last week Pickled Tink hosted Molly's 10th Birthday Party! We taught 6 girls how to sew. They made pajama pants and then went back to Molly's for a slumber party (in their pajama pants of course). How cute is that? They enjoyed pizza from Blue Moon Pizza and Cup Cakes from Batch Cupcakery (I love to promote local businesses when I can).

Okay, Okay I get it! So my lovely friends and family so graciously informed me that when you start a blog you need to update or people stop checking=( I also got advise that I need to make our blog a little more personal so people know what to expect when they come take a class at Pickled Tink.

I am new at this whole blogging thing so bare with me! For my first official blog entry I want to share some exciting news:

Were on TV! Tune into Reno Style which is on KREN on Sunday's at 9:00-1:30. If you want a good laugh they make me dance to "you ain't nothing but a hound dog." So embarrassing!

We will be on the cover of Clever magazine next month! With a two page editorial. So excited!

We have neighbors! The Tracey's (they don't like being called that, but I think it's adorable) are opening a new boutique and events lounge next door. They are opening next month! I will be posting pictures and more details soon!

The July calendar is almost finished!!! I will have it posted by the end of the week. If you don't have time to come by and sign up for classes just go to our website and sign up online=) Also, gift certificates are now available online.
